The Middlesex Public Library is on the hunt for a dynamic and innovative Librarian to join our staff full time, primarily in the area of Youth Services, but also as an in-house, all ages, Youth Services Librarian.

Middlesex Borough is a cozy, four square mile town, located in central NJ. Don’t let our size fool you – MDSX has a BIG personality! Our diverse population takes pride in our Library, our schools, and our community. Our Library is within walking distance from 3 schools in the area, and has boasted creative and popular children’s programming for the past few years. We’re looking for a Librarian to bring passion and enthusiasm to our Children’s Department in the areas of collection development and programming, as well as expand current collections and services for tween and teen populations.

Our belief at MDSX is that learning is not limited to the years you are in a school building. As Librarians, our job is to help the masses gain education and information through a variety of means. Our ideal Librarian would be excited to weave various skills and aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and/or Mathematics (STEAM/STEM) into ALL ages of programming and collection development – in creative, inventive ways, supporting the Adult Services Librarian in programming as well as creating their own Youth Services programming.

Primarily, this job is focused on Youth Services, serving children ages 0-17 and their caregivers: providing advanced reference and readers’ advisory service to children, young adults, parents and other adult caregivers; planning, promoting and implementing activities for children and their caregivers; planning and promoting outreach services to children, teachers and caregivers at primary schools, aftercare, summer camp, daycares, preschools and other programs; overseeing weeding, and promotion of library materials in an assigned subject area(s); participating in professional development activities; working on special projects as assigned by supervisor and/or Director.

Other non-Youth Services duties may include: providing backup reference services in the adult department as needed; instructing and/or training staff and/or public to use electronic resources; providing dynamic hands on programming to different ages in STEAM resources and ideas, provide backup at the Circulation Desk as needed.

Professional Qualifications/Requirements

Per N.J.S.A. 45:8A-1 et seq., a degree from accredited MLS program and NJ Professional Librarian Certificate IS REQUIRED.

Professional library experience (especially with youth services) a plus, but not required

Candidates should have had coursework in service to children and teens, children’s and teen literature, and print and electronic reference resources

Ability to effectively use and demonstrate technology tools including the web, email, electronic databases, e-readers, office applications, etc.

Personal Qualifications/Requirements

Adaptable, fluid, able to work with different personalities with staff and patrons in a positive manner

Engaging, able to establish connections with children, parents, young adults, caregivers, etc.

Willing and enthusiastic about continuing education, via reading journals, magazines, attending seminars and workshops on new trends in Librarianship, technology, etc.

Able to work under pressure and/or manage stressful situations with courtesy and tact
